Details About Certain Products Found in the Punto Simply Market
Grocery stores in Rome carry products such as wine, oils, vinegars, cheese, and breads that have certain protections. With these protections come regulations for the products. For example, balsamic vinegars can receive a D.O.P. (Protected Designation of Origin) or an I.G.P. (Indication of Geographic Protection) seal. A company needs to do more in order to receive a D.O.P. seal for balsamic vinegar. The balsamic vinegar needs to be in a wooden barrel for at least 12 years and the whole production process for the product must be done in the specific region. This is not the case for an I.G.P. Balsamic vinegar; for this, the product does not have to be in the barrel for 12 years and only part of the production process has to be in a specific region. Below is a photograph of a balsamic vinegar with an I.G.P. seal, for which part of the production process was done in Modena, Italy.
Another example of a kind of protected food one can find at the grocery store is cheese. At the Punto Simply Market, you can find D.O.P. mozzarella di bufala. In order for mozzarella bufala to receive a D.O.P. seal, it must be made from the traditional recipe and be produced in a certain region. A shopper can find the cheese counter at the back of the Punto Simply Market and order it--if he is lucky enough to find an employee working behind the counter. Below is a photograph of a mozzarella bufala with a D.O.P. seal. The protections on products give customers a better understanding of what they're purchasing, and can help customers select the ingredients to make the perfect home cooked meal.
