Grace Myers is a reformed psychology major at the University of Maryland who spent most of her middle and high school years wanting to be an Italian Chef and restaurant owner. During a family trip to Rome in 2017, she was overwhelmed by the sensations and flavors of the eternal city, and was determined to return to explore the city on her own terms. She chose a study abroad program in summer 2018 focused on understanding and expressing food through writing to immerse herself in the tastes and traditions that shape the culture through eating. During this stay, her apartment was in the Trastevere area, a quintessential neighborhood of cobblestone streets and a daily open air market with frequented by locals and tourists alike. Her professor insisted she explore the Testaccio food market directly across the river if she truly wanted to understand the Roman soul, which she delighted in returning to again and again for buttery croissants and fresh eggplants. She is a particular fan of the classic Roman pasta dish Rigatoni alla Gricia and hopes to incorporate her new skills in her everyday cooking back home.
